The Conference South side Basingstoke Town have made an ambitious bid to sign Ronaldinho.

The 34-year-old former Barcelona and Milan playmaker, capped almost 100 times by his country, is a free agent after leaving the Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro and representatives from Basingstoke, third in the sixth tier of English football, have contacted his brother, Roberto de Assis Moreira.

“We’ve put an offer to his brother, who is his agent, and look forward hearing back from him,” Basingstoke’s marketing director, Simon Hood, told BBC South.

“We took a look at the transfer list to see which players were available. We were shocked to see that Ronaldinho was a free agent and thought what better way for him to get back into football than to play for Basingstoke Town.

“We are third in the table and it would be great for not only Basingstoke but non-league football.”

Basingstoke, who have renamed their ground The Soccer AM Stadium as part of a sponsorship deal with Sky Sports’ Saturday morning show, are third in the table as they bid to get promoted to the Vanarama Conference.

Reminder to all as well that it's non league day this weekend so get out and support your local non league clubs

FC are playing in Liverpool so I hope the locals give it a miss personally, it's not nicest of fixtures to go to begin with.

Nice publicity stunt by Basingstoke.

1,142 in attendance.

One of the Birmingham-ish clubs in our league got over 750, impressive that.
