On this week's Top Gear, the presenters get down with the kids, Richard heads to Abu Dhabi for a duel in the desert and Jeremy engages in some verbal jousting with a solid-gold national treasure.

In our latest car-buying challenge, Jeremy, Richard and James attempt to find the perfect cars for newly-qualified drivers. They'll be tackling the three hurdles facing any teenage car buyer, namely insurance costs, repair bills and how to negotiate a muddy festival car park.

At the other end of the motoring spectrum, Hammond is jetting off to Abu Dhabi for a drive in the hardcore SV version of Lamborghini's Murcielago. The standard car isn't exactly for the faint-hearted, so this could easily be a date with the world's scariest supercar.

While he's there, Richard will be taking advantage of Abu Dhabi's comically high supercar-per-capita ratio by staging a Top Gear world's first; a race between the McLaren F1 and the Bugatti Veyron.

Back in the studio, Jeremy will be joined by Renaissance man and Twitter-enthusiast Stephen Fry

The BBC has announced that Top Gear will be available in high definition on BBC HD starting on November 15.

To date, the only episode of BBC Two's hit motoring entertainment show to be broadcast in HD was the July 2007 polar special.

In a post on the BBC Internet Blog, Nagler explained: "I can confirm that the team is now working with HD cameras on the new series.

"You've been very clear that this is a BBC programme that for you represents the best of what we do, and that you believe it is one of those series that can benefit most from HD. I agree with you, and I'm confident that the shift will ensure that the cars are glossier and faster than ever, and the presenters... well, probably will look even more like their reflections in the mirror but we'll all have to wait to judge."

Top Gear presenter James May escaped unhurt when an airship he was travelling in crash-landed in a field.

May was filming a feature for the TV show in which a caravan was attached to the bright orange airship and flown across Cambridgeshire.

It was supposed to land on a cricket pitch but strong winds blew it off course and it landed on its side in a farmer's field near the A428.

Emergency services were on stand-by, but were not needed, the BBC said.

Eyewitness Peter Clarke told the Daily Mail newspaper the caravan-carrying airship was "a very strange sight".

He said: "I understand they were planning to land on the village cricket green in the middle of a match.

"All the cricketers were there dressed in their whites waiting for it to appear, but it started drifting off in the wrong direction.

"The film crew were a bit fed up as they'd been hanging around the village all day waiting for the wind to drop so they could film."

A spokeswoman for Top Gear confirmed May was uninjured, but refused to disclose any further details about the stunt.

"Viewers will have to wait until the next series to find out what happens," she added

A spoof car advert shown on BBC Two's motoring show Top Gear was too graphic for the time of its broadcast, the broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has ruled.

The mock advert, which featured a man committing suicide by shooting himself in the head, prompted 50 complaints.

The BBC argued that the advert, shown before the 2100 watershed on 2 August, was "ludicrous and obviously comic".

But Ofcom found the programme in breach of its guidelines, saying it "exceeded audience expectations".

The spoof suicide, it ruled, was both "graphically depicted" and "potentially disturbing" and was not editorially justified.

Edited out

No warning had been given before the programme, which also included a mock advert featuring a man with a severed arm in a hospital waiting room.

Ofcom noted that the scene showing the man shooting himself was edited out of a repeat of the programme shown on BBC Two at an earlier time.

It is not the first time that Top Gear - hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May - has fallen foul of the broadcasting regulator.

In 2007, Clarkson was criticised for describing a vehicle as being "ginger beer", a term Ofcom said could be offensive to homosexuals.

The following year, though, the same presenter escaped censure after making jokes about lorry drivers murdering prostitutes.

In its November bulletin, Ofcom cleared Top Gear on three other counts that drew a total of 13 complaints.

NEXT ON:
Sunday, 21:00 on BBC Two (except Northern Ireland (Analogue), Wales (Analogue))

In the first of a brand new series, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May take an Aston DBS Volante, a Ferrari California and a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder to Romania in search of an obscure stretch of tarmac that some hardcore drivers claim is nothing less than the greatest road in the world.

Meanwhile, James makes a rare appearance on the track as he compares two absurdly powerful limos, the BMW 760i and Mercedes S63 AMG, and gets into a strange card game with The Stig.

Plus, Star Trek, Troy and Hulk star Eric Bana is the Hollywood legend in the Reasonably Priced Car.

If you have a Top Gear-shaped chasm in your life that relentless digital TV repeats just can't seem to fill, relax. The brand-new factory-fresh series of the World's Favourite Car Show™ is just around the corner.

If you're a regular Top Gear viewer, you'll know more or less what to expect. If you're new to the series, try to imagine what might happen if a trio of eleven year-old boys had access to some of the world's most desirable supercars and lots of sugary sweets. Sounds awesome, right?

So, ready yourself for 9pm, Sunday 15th November on BBC Two. Please note the new later start time as it is significant for two reasons. Firstly, we're aiming to save roughly two million relationships by avoiding a clash with the X-Factor. Secondly, if you're one of our younger viewers and your bedtime is before 10pm, start the wheedling, nagging and emotional blackmail now, there's still time to wear your parents down.

The first episode sees Clarkson, Hammond and May searching for a fabled stretch of Romanian tarmac in three of the latest drop-top supercars. James will be taking a couple of super-limos to task and Hollywood heartthrob, confirmed petrolhead and thoroughly good bloke Eric Bana becomes a star in a reasonably priced car.

The brand new series of Top Gear begins 9pm, Sunday 15th November on BBC Two and BBC HD

Series 15 of TopGear telly hits your screens this summer, and the boys are already hard at work filming a selection of mature, considered and balanced films on matters automotive for your considered consumption.
Clearly we don’t want to give away all the secrets from the new series, but with the video below spreading across the internet like wildfire – OK, maybe not wildfire exactly, but a lively disposable barbecue at least – we thought we’d add a couple more shots of TopGear Motorhome Action to whet your appetite.
The video, if you haven’t seen it yet, was taken by a young couple on an obscure stretch of A-road in the south-west of England, and is surely the most extreme reaction to TopGear ever.
Possibly the most extreme reaction to anything, ever, in the history of the universe.
Though we don’t want to ruin the final film for you, the YouTube clip appears to show footage of our three intrepid heroes in some kind of jerry-built motorhomes. And Britain’s most excitable parents.
All we know is, it bodes well for the new series. Check back for more exclusives from series 15: it’s nearly here…

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have both broken the record for the fastest celebrity lap times during their appearance on Top Gear.

The Knight and Day actors took part in the 'star in a reasonably priced car' challenge on the BBC motoring show on Sunday night, which saw each of them drive round a racing track in a small hatchback.

Diaz posted the series's quickest time of 1 minute, 45.2 seconds, which itself was shortly eclipsed by Cruise's time of 1 minute, 44.2 seconds.

They both beat the existing record of 1 minute, 45.5 seconds set by Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint.

Cruise, who drove round the final corner of the track on two wheels as his car tilted sideways, said: "This is the best day. This was like a vacation.

"When I was on two wheels I thought, 'I don't know what's going to happen... If I go through on the side does the time still count?'."

Host Jeremy Clarkson admitted: "That was a breathtaking thing."

A RELIANT Robin driver claimed yesterday vandals tipped his car over TWICE - copying a stunt on TV's Top Gear.

Barry Cloughton, 78, said he believed yobs got the idea from the show hosted by Jeremy Clarkson.

Fuming ... Barry with broken wing mirror

The presenter and Sun columnist was shown on Sunday repeatedly overturning the three-wheeler as he tried to go around corners.

A couple of hours later Barry found his white Reliant had been pushed on its side outside his home.

Police were called and the car was righted but Barry needed attention from paramedics because of the trauma.

Then, at 3am on Tuesday, the louts returned and flipped the car again.

The Reliant ended up with a smashed wing mirror and damaged door.

Great-granddad Barry, a retired heating engineer of St Austell, Cornwall, said: "It might be all a laugh for Mr Clarkson but this is not funny for me."

The Top Gear stunt was first shown in June and repeated on Sunday.

Barry has driven Reliant Robins for 40 years.

Clarkson said last night: "I can assure Mr Cloughton that I did not find my journey in the Reliant a 'huge laugh'. It hurt very much.

"But I did finish the trip with a fondness for the little car and I'm hurt someone should turn yours over.

"That'd be like turning a tortoise on to its shell for a giggle. I hope those responsible are caught soon and birched."

Prince Harry is reportedly being lined up to appear in the next series of 'Top Gear'.

The show's presenter Jeremy Clarkson has persuaded the Royal to be the 'Star in a reasonably priced car', according to The Sun.

A source told the paper: "The prince is a massive 'Top Gear' fan and is dying to give the Kia a spin. He loves driving and ideally he'd like to beat Tom Cruise just for the boasting rights."

They added: "He doesn't want it to be all about him. He wants to raise awareness of the Armed Forces."

The news comes on the day it is reported that the Prince has completed a training course to fly Apache helicopters and could fly them in Afghanistan as early as next Spring.

The last series was poor.

Getting an inbred ginger spunk monkey to guest star won't improve matters much.

Anyone seen any of the new series?

I've seen a couple of them and apart from the fact that Evans just doesn't work as a host for the show I think it's actually been ok the films they've put together on the cars have been good and Matt Le Blanc is a natural at presenting.

Things I don't like are they still persist with the setup lines for the Stig that belongs to the old presenters the should leave that next series and just show the stig doing the laps as we want to see how these cars compare against each other.

I think they've probably improved the factual side of things but what is missing is the fun side of things you used to get from the old presenters where you could just see it was 3 mates messing about (although a lot of that was staged) the new cast just don't have that sort of blend yet.

Probably the right thing to do no one was winning from that arrangement.

If the new show wasn't called "Top Gear" people probably wouldn't be so harsh on it but the Top Gear name is huge for the BBC they transmit it all over the world which makes them a lot of money so it needs to be right and Evans didn't work.

Will they promote Matt Le Blanc to main presenter or will they try someone else? If they ditch the celeb interviews I think he'd be a good presenter but not sure he'd be that good at the interview stuff
