As of 12:01AM the United States government is officially shut down until further notice. Meaning 800,000 government employees are currently furlowed. Don't worry though all the members of congress who've made this mess will continue to be paid.

The system is officially broken I feel and I'm not sure there is anyway to fix it. The big issue that lead to all of this is "Obamacare"

Don't understand how any decent minded person can object to a program that is there to help those in need of medical help but who do not have the means to afford it. Talk about an 'I'm alright Jack' attitude.

Also, why should the members of the Congress and Senate continue to be paid?

Without knowing anything about the situation, I assume it'll mean a fairly big tax hike, with funding cuts elsewhere.

According to some polls as many as 2/3 of Americans support Obamacare.

And you're going to find this surprising O-dog but yesterday when they couldn't agree on much else the republicans and democrats came across the aisle and agreed on a bill to continue to pay "essential government employees" during the shut down, you'll never guess Congress falls under that umbrella. It's a farce

It's staggering is what it is. Not only staggering that this shutdown be allowed to happen at all, but to cause such chaos over something that seems to genuinely benefit the American people?

And even worse, delays to pension cheques and veteran payments, education and social care cuts etc. while the Department of Defence and of course the already wealthy members of Congress / Senate will continue burning through significant sums of money. Talk about twisted priorities.

What are the big objections to Obamacare anyway?

Well the Republicans say it's unconstitutional. Over the short term it'll actually increase healthcare spending, mostly because people will be able to go to doctors for preventitive care they haven't been heretofore able to afford. It'll raise taxes on wealthy individuals and businesses. And some reports say it'll cost anywhere between 1 and 5 million people jobs. And the the estimates on the cost of the program are even more wide open that goes from $1.74 trillion being added to our debt all the way to $143 billion coming off the debt.

The US has operated without a budget since 2009, with various short term fixes being adopted to keep the whole thing ticking over. They've spent the last few weeks maybe months in this staring contest waiting for the other to blink and now here we are. They all look like a bunch of spoiled children whom, to use a British phrase, have thrown their toys out the pram. It's ridiculous, it's petty, and as I've said previously the whole government is a farce.

Also Ted Cruz who is referenced in the link, is a real @ss he decided to filabuster last week by reading "green eggs and ham" by dr. Seuss on the floor of congress. Again my government is a farce

Filibuster-
1.
a. The use of obstructionist tactics, especially prolonged speechmaking, for the purpose of delaying legislative action.
b. An instance of the use of this delaying tactic.
