To win the test I agree we need to get the tail out quickly and cheaply but the reality is the batters have got to show up for us.

The experienced heads like Cook, KP & Bell need to put in a serious innings to guide the likes of Carberry & Root through.

Even if this was to end as a draw if the batters can get some big scores that's good enough for England we need Australia to fear bowling to us.

Decent watch last night, managed to first two sessions but then fell asleep.

It was pretty miserable up until the second wicket, at 155-1 it was becoming pretty tedious to watch. Last two sessions definitely England's, shame about the slow start... hopefully get off to a quick start tonight instead.

These late nights are going to ruin me.

Apparently the ball that Mitchell bowled to Cook was clocked at 93mph

They estimate a reaction time of 0.5 seconds would be required to stop that ball basically your only hope is that he's bowled it at where your bat happens to be

Yeah that's ridiculous, almost like facing a pitch on baseball.

Seems like England can only hold out for the draw now, but when they play conservatively they end up collapsing.

Yep this is where in England we'd be praying for rain IIRC in the summer the rain came at good times for England but it's highly unlikely we'll lose a day to rain in Australia during their summer.

I tend to agree there's no reason to play defensively just play properly it's day 3 Australia have just batted for 2 days on this pitch so why can't we? I've not heard any reports of the pitch falling apart obviously we'll be tired from fielding for nearly 2 whole days but the vital thing is to make sure that we make it to the end of today and avoid the follow on.

Australia 272-6 as we approach the end of day 1.

Much more positive day for England but I wont get my hopes up until we bat because we had them in this sort of position after day 1 of the first test then collapsed so I'd say both sides will be fairly happy unless England can get the last wickets very cheap and restrict Australia to something under 350

Really p*sses me off when England do well with the ball and then fail to get a wicket that takes ages.. just ruins the rest of the day.

Only just seen the recovery 143-5 to 326-6 at close of play it really looks like chance gone as a gruelling day of fielding you can see Australia cruising past 400 unless England skittle them in the first session which at the moment just doesn't look very likely.

I haven't watch enough of the 3 tests to say if Australia have batted well or England have bowled poorly but the reports I've read suggest it's a combination of the two England bowlers have been worked out and England have been a little sloppy in the field a couple of dropped catches at key times something that we haven't really had to put up with recently.

66 overs left. England need 180 runs. Australia need 4 wickets.

Stokes and Bresnan in.

Stokes has his ton. Bresnan not been in long.

England made it to lunch. Don't think many of us expected to get even this far.

172 runs needed for victory.

61 overs remaining.

4 wickets in hand. Still a slight chance that Australia may not gain the Ashes today. It's approaching 5 though and I should probably head to bed!

And that's that. Stokes out. Needed another hour of his class at least.
