Aussies won the toss and opt to bat. Will all be kicking off soon.

Last time the Ashes were down under, my daughter had just arrived, so staying up all night was pretty much a no brainer - watch the cricket and earn soooo many brownie points. This time, I've got to take the little devil to pre-school each morning, so I doubt there'll be any all-nighters.

Still, stupidly excited about it all. Come on England!

Think we'll take the series 3-1.

Get in there! Aussies 12-1. Broad gets Rogers with a good short ball.

73-3.

Broad gets Clarke in the most predictable fashion; a short ball. Broad is shoving the Aussie's abuse straight down their throats.

100-5.

Ando. I know, we all wanted it to be Broad.

Aussies in a spot of bother.

Tremlett with a peach gets Smith. 132-6 the Aussies on a good batting pitch to boot.

What a lovely score to wake up to.

273 - 8 and Broad taking 5 will have only wound them up even more didn't manage to catch any of it last night will hopefully get to see some of it over the weekend.

Heard this morning that Broad is the leading wicket taker in test cricket this year that was his 50th wicket of the year

Fecking Virgin Media. :wall: :sulk:

Ten minutes into the days play and my TV service goes down. Still not working, so I've pretty much lost the morning session. No technical support this time of night. As soon as my current contract is up, Virgin can do one.

Early breakthrough on day 3

Broad dismissed Rodgers.

Australia 71-1 lead by 230

England really need a good day here to save this test

Watson gone 75-2

Caught broad bowled Tremlett.

2 poor shots by Australia.

Looks like it's a similar story to this summer 2 average batting sides vs 2 good bowling attacks.

Looks like we've lost this one. Let's at least get a centurion or two.

Disastrous start but at least it will be a close series either way this time.

They maybe needed that Australia's first win in 9 ashes tests maybe a touch of complacency settled in with England especially the batting.

They've got to start putting scores on the board again to give the bowlers something to work with.

Australia played very well if they play close to that level over the next 4 tests it'll be very hard for England to come back.

So Trott has left the tour due to struggles with his mental health which has resulted in some idiotic comments from various people on twitter it's an illness and should be shown the sort of respect it deserves. Trott has managed it throughout his career and been a fine batsmen for England but something has triggered it and it's only right that he gets himself home to get the help he needs. I've seen a few people slam Warner for his comments which if he knew about Trott's problems were bang out of order but his comments might have been made without the knowledge of what was going on behind the scenes.

As for Clarke being fined 20% of his match fee that seems a little harsh as it would appear he came in to defend his team mate from a volley of abuse from Jimmy Anderson who was trying to intimidate an Aussie. It didn't seen to cause much of a reaction on the pitch wasn't like they squared up or anything so leave it on the pitch or have a word with both of them. If the umpires hear it and feel they need to step in then fine but it has to work both ways it appears though that Clarke coming in from slip to have a word is what's got him in trouble as the umpire may not of heard what Anderson said.

So it leaves England with a bit of a predicament as to who bats at number 3. Do they move Pietersen up even though he has said in the past he doesn't like batting at 3? Or do you move Root or Bell up the order to order to 3?

Will be interesting to see what happens that has to be a wake up call to England we made a great start on day 1 and had them on the ropes on what was a batters wicket but our batsmen need to improve in the second test otherwise we could easily find ourselves 2 down in the series.

Here's wishing all the best to Trott, it's a tough illness to battle.

I'd be tempted to move Bell up to three and bring in Ballance at six as he has the best average of the main batting candidates. Stokes could be useful as he also adds to the bowling attack.

All square after Day 1 I'd say. Need to restrict the Aussies to under 400 though IMO.
