Due to budget cuts at the BBC, their websites are being slashed and the 606 football forum is to finally close for good.

Which leaves us with an excellent one-off opportunity to attract new users.

We're looking for people with existing 606 accounts, as new accounts are pre-modded and the links you post may not get through unfortunately.

The general drill is the same as usual, posting things such as "Well, seeing as though this is closing, I've found a new forum at awaygoalsrule.com that's good, there's no WUMs and it's a chilled place" or whatever, and invite them to join you. Use your imagination. A bit of banter with it can make all the difference and be a lot more successful than just posting dozens of "Join awaygoalsrule.com today!" links that just look like spam.

It works especially well if you've spoken to some of the regular names on there 'cause they're more likely to listen to your suggestion, but some will still try us out anyway. Also in my experience the posts are more likely to get through if it's on topic, with a sort of PS with the AGR link in too at the end.

What we don't want is if anyone has a go at you, calls you a spammer, says the forum is sh1t etc. then just say each to their own mate... don't be arguing and fighting involving our name 'cause it looks bad and puts people off.

So, if anyone wants to help out that'd be great. Spread the word.

Good idea, Cons.

I'm still a regular poster on 606 and have had my comments published on their live text a few times. I've got the AGR URL in my profile already, but will definitely put a small addendum to my posts there RE AGR.

Any idea on when they're closing down?

Nice one, thanks. Every little helps.

According to the beeb:

Quote:
"The 606 website will close at the end of the current football season..."

Then that's it. Done. Not sure who'll miss it tbh, all those years and all that money and they never did get it quite right.

And Sparky, we are targeting 606 itself as it's due to close, the members will be on the lookout for a new online hang out and that's where we come in, natch. But thoughtful advertising is always welcome be that on Tw@tter, SpazBook, or wherever.

Set up one what? A tweet? Or a Twitter account? Assumed you'd already have the latter, and we don't plan on having another AGR Twitter account, seeing as though we already have one, that tbh, we don't bother using much. Too much noise to get noticed on places like that, and people can tend to have too short an attention span imo, it's just the style of the place.

It's better off coming from your own accounts so that your followers and contacts can see them instead of coming from the forum account when they've never heard of it. As you know, recommendations from people you know works far better than random cold-call style of advertising.

ah right, didn't realise that you already had one tbh. Yeah I'll do some 'tweet'vertising on mine then.

Wow we have twitter.... I'm not there lol. I refuse to become assimilated too much - already on facebook - I'd be glued to a PC/mobile gadget with twitter too! I think my old 606 a/c is deactivated due to inactivity but I could sign up just to spam em :angelnot:

You should use that AGR twitter account to advertise also.

People don't have to be following it, to be able to see the ads.

Use hashtags to get attention. #mufc #forum for example .. it'll make each word before the hash become a link, and when a user clicks on a word, it'll bring up the search engine with any mentions/tweets containing that word.

So if say someone clicks on a post made by someone else containing #mufc, the search engine would spring up, and AGR's tweet would then be visible.

#mufc is just an example, btw. That hashtag will be refreshing a few times per minute, because it'll be spoken about elsewhere loads. Like this: http://twitter.com/#!/search/mufc

Tw@tter confuses the f*ck outta me. Just thought I'd share that with you all.

I've only ever bothered looking at 606 about twice and they all seemed a bit special.

It's a piece of cake once you figure out the basics.

Very useful too, if you follow the right people.. and not wums.

Apart from Ian Prior, who made a cock of himself today (a guardian bloke)

Yeah I was looking at it today and watching the ianprior thing unfold. The amount of abuse he got afterwards was quite funny. Some spesh actually said he hopes Ian dies lol.

He took it well to be fair.

I noticed him 'retweet' a message that was something like 'Everyone unfollow @ianprior. Retweet this.' Was quite amusing. :D

Glad it's gone. There was no more than 50 people who could actually post objective, intelligent posts and I think most of them ended up here.

606 - the graveyard of internet forums. :rip:

It was twice as busy at weekends in the school holidays, tells you all you need to know.
