Luca Toni scored twice as Verona beat Milan 2-1 on Saturday to celebrate their return to Serie A after an 11-year absence.

If that result got the Italian league off to a shock start it was more to form as Juventus kicked off their bid for a third consecutive title with Carlos Tevez scoring in the 58th minute of a 1-0 win at Sampdoria.

Juventus did not quite dominate as they did in their 4-0 rout of Lazio in last weekend's Super Cup but Antonio Conte's men showed the same poise and discipline of the past two seasons.

Tevez, Juventus's big close-season signing from Manchester City, only had to tap in after taking a pass from Paul Pogba on the edge of the box on a rainy night at the Juventus Stadium.

It was a different story in Verona, where Andrea Poli put Milan ahead in the 14th minute after a pass from Mario Balotelli before Toni struck back with headers in the 30th and 53rd minutes.

"There's no better way to start the season," the Verona midfielder Massimo Donati said.

It was a disturbing result for Milan before Wednesday's return-leg with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League play-offs. Milan also gave up a lead in the opening leg, drawing 1-1.

"The explanation is simple: we played bad football and we played poorly as a squad," the Milan coach, Massimiliano Allegri, said. "We needed to control the ball better. We played poorly and they deserved the victory. We need to play with more nastiness and more attentively."

The other eight matches of the opening weekend will be played on Sunday, with last year's runners-up Napoli hosting Bologna and Internazionale facing Genoa at the San Siro. Lazio face Udinese with one end of their stadium closed as punishment for fan racism in the Super Cup.

I saw a YouTube clip of a fans view of a Pogba goal recently.

He has got some strike on him and the more you see him the more you think we've let a real gem slip through our fingers.

Do you think Juve will get 3 in a row?

Napoli have bought well and will probably be the main threat but can't see past Juve the games between those two should be a bit tasty this year.

Will be interesting to see what Llorente is like having spent a year benching for Bilbao

I would be amazed if Juve didn't win it, they should walk it, especially now that they've bolstered their weakest positions with Llorente and Tevez.

That Ogbanna they signed from Torino looks a beast of a defender too.

Don't keep up with English transfers, never mind Italian ones, but just had a look and Napoli have done some decent business tbf. Let's see how they get on without Cavani though, could be a big loss for them, even if they have spent the money on others.

Napoli are threatening to sue for €100m (£86.1m) after former Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain cut his face diving into underwater rocks.

The Argentine international needed eight stitches on his face after leaping off a boat near the island of Capri. The ex-Real Madrid striker, who cost £35m, is now a fitness doubt for Rafa Benitez's team for Saturday's Serie A match against Chievo.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said: "I saw a picture of the wound and I am willing to ask my lawyers to ask for €100m in damages - a figure that I will donate to charity. What does the mayor of Capri and the president of the region do?

"The politicians have to be taught a lesson. It is not like this even in Africa."

Mental. I know it's a few days old the article but just the hilarity of it meant I had to post it still.

Pogba just assisted another goal setting up Vidal this time.

1-0 up v Lazio.

http://www.viplivesports.eu/football/17 ... nline.html

Forgetting about Pogba for a minute, Vidal would be the perfect signing from a United point of view.

Edit: 2-0 Vidal

Edit: 2-1 Klose

Class finish by Tevez, made that look so casual.

4-1 Juve..

Vidal x2, Vucinic, Tevez - Klose.

Juve win and llorente with decisive winning header and napoli defeated Milan at home, nothing new but Balotelli missed or more approriate pep reina saved his penalty but napoli under rafa is a good bet to win serie A but its early dayz plus tevez is a twat.

Anyone see Fiorentina v Juve earlier?

Ex United players bagged 5 goals between them. :D

Juve were 2-0 up (Tevez / Pogba)

Then Fiorentina scored 4 in about 15 mins mid-second half.

Rossi scored a hat-trick and some other lad. Finished 4-2.

That other lad was Joaquin.

Just seen the highlights apparently Tevez & Pogba p*ssed off the locals by doing the Batistuta machine gun celebrations when they scored although as one person pointed out Tevez may have been paying homage to Batistuta.

Great to see Rossi fit and playing again seems like a lovely lad was just a shame he never really broke through at Utd. The prem probably wasn't the best place for him to show off his talents but when fit he's been absolute goal machine.

Roma became the first team to win the opening 10 matches of a Serie A season when they beat Chievo 1-0 on Thursday.

Striker Marco Borriello's first goal of the campaign gave the Italian league leaders a slender home victory over the bottom-of-the-table team.

Roma, who have scored 24 goals and conceded just one this campaign, lead second-placed Napoli by five points.

"It's a nice satisfaction, we've made history, but now we have to look ahead to our trip to Torino," said Borriello.

"We're also playing very well away from home, but our objective is (to qualify for) Europe."

25 Sep: Sampdoria (away) 2-0
29 Sep: Bologna (home) 5-0
05 Oct: Inter Milan (away) 3-0
18 Oct: Napoli (home) 2-0
27 Oct : Udinese (away) 1-0
31 Oct: Chievo (home) 1-0

Rudi Garcia's side equalled Juventus's record of nine opening wins in last weekend thanks to a late 1-0 win away to Udinese.

Juve achieved the feat during the 2005-2006 season, when the Turin giants were stripped of the title and any other related honours for match-fixing.

Despite missing captain Francesco Totti and Gervinho through injury and with defender Maicon suspended, Roma dominated but struggled to break down Chievo before the break.

As the second half wore on, Marquinho was replaced with striker Alessandro Florenzi and the hosts broke the deadlock several minutes later.

Miralem Pjanic's pass found Florenzi deep on the left and the forward's inviting cross was headed home by Borriello from six yards.

Luca Rigoni went close for the visitors late on before Adem Ljajic's free-kick was tipped away by goalkeeper Christian Puggioni to prevent a second.

Roma finally drop points against Juve's friends, Torino.

Juve won 1-0 yesterday with a Pogba winner late on.

3pts behind now.

Roma dropped points again.

Juve 3-0 against Napoli.

Great weekend all round.

And Pogba scored a volley from outside the box in off the post. Not sure why he's not warming the bench of playing in the reserve team though.

That was some strike by Pogba such a shame we lost out on him.

The only thing better than a Pirlo free kick is his casual run up no idea how he gets the ball to do that
