England captain Wayne Rooney is set to start Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Slovenia as a substitute.

Barring any last-minute injuries, manager Gareth Southgate will leave Rooney on the bench as England look to preserve their 100% record.

Southgate will address the press in Slovenia at 18:30 BST on Monday.

Rooney is England's most-capped outfield player, making his 117th international appearance in the 2-0 win against Malta on Saturday.

However, his performances recently have been heavily criticised and the 30-year-old was booed by sections of the Wembley crowd at the weekend, when he operated in a deep-lying midfield role.

Guessing that means Dier in for Rooney?

I heard Bertrand got injured on Saturday so guessing that means Rose will be back in as well but can't imagine there will be any other changes.

Assumed Starting XI

Hart

Walker Stones Cahill Rose

Dier Henderson

Walcott Alli Lingard

Rashford

Can't see him starting Sturridge twice in 3 days and Rashford's performance for U21's might get him the nod ahead of Vardy although he might be tempted to play Rashford wide with Vardy up top.

He might want to have a look at Smalling with Stones as an idea going forward but I don't really think he'll use this game to test that as an out and out defender I'd say Smalling is superior but Cahill is better with the ball although recently for Chelsea he has been getting caught on it a bit.

Social media blaming Lingard

Blame the other Utd player in Rooney's absence?

No one offering anything going forward lucky to be ahead that Dier backpass should be punished

England were shit. Townsend, Hart, the only players who had a decent run out can hold their head high.

Truly pathetic.

Yep poor performance no real surprise though England it's been coming we should've lost that game but got away with a draw thanks to some great saves by Joe Hart.

Watched the game on a small TV in a hotel bar with very little sound so couldn't tell who was doing what a lot of the time but it seemed like non stop chaos at the back CB's doing little silly things to give the ball away and making mistake not sure if it was Stones, Cahill or both.

Thought Alli looked bright in the first half the most threatening of the 3 behind the striker but the wide guys did nothing and Sturridge did what Rooney does a lot and dropped deep to get on the ball rather than stay up top.

Lucky to get away with a point but 2 hardest away games boxed off already and 7 points from 3 games is good enough considering the turmoil.

Change the manager every week it won't make any difference it's the quality of the players that holds us back
