At this point... Can I thank Newcastle and Mike Ashley for the service they've provided for Football fans up and down the country - no more Al on Match Of The Day (hopefully)!

Indeed, I would love Southgate to be back on the pitch instead of on the sidelines at the moment..Shearer would probably break Gareth's nose in the first five minutes though.

Its a cop out really isn't it? No matter what happens he's gonna remain a legend. If it continues to be terrible then he'll be absolved of any blame as he's only had 8 games and if they win a few games he'll have a solid gold statue erected in the centre of the toon. Like I said, he's just dipping his toes in the water really isn't he?

Ashley planning for relegation maybe? Soften the blow by having Shearer in charge when they go down, and leave him in charge for next season to keep attendances and support up.

Sky Sports News understands Iain Dowie will join Newcastle United as Alan Shearer's assistant.

An official statement from the club with regards Shearer's appointment will be made on Wednesday afternoon, but it would appear he is already putting in place his own people.

Dowie has been out of football since leaving Queens Park Rangers earlier in the season but will be a key part of Shearer's coaching staff.

Shearer and Dowie remain friends from their time together as players at Southampton.

While Shearer is a novice in the managerial game, Dowie has accrued considerable experience during spells at Oldham, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Coventry and QPR.

Stay tuned to Sky Sports News and skysports.com as we bring you all the breaking news from St James' Park.

I'm still convinced this is part of the most elaborate April Fools prank ever and is the working of Niall Quinn.

It is considered bad luck to continue April Fools jokes after midday though. Anyway, does anybody really need to try and make Newcastle more of a joke?

If it's true then I'm sure they're preparing for life in the Championship, cos that's where Dowie always ends up.

And where he was recently sacked from QPR as he was rubbish.

It doesn't say if the story was posted on sky sports before or after midday.

Well Sunderland and Middlesborough do to distract from the fact that they're both struggling to stay in the league.

Yup, he had one good half season with Palace, and has done nothing since.

Sunderland will stay up, Newcastle and Boro to join West Brom going down IMO.

Dunno I still fancy Hull to go they're in free fall and just don't look like winning games at the moment.

This is true, but I'm not convinced there are enough games left in the season for them to drop into it. Hull are 4 points above the drop zone with 8 games left. They're likely to pick up some points, and even if they don't, Newcastle are in a mess, and Boro can't score goals.

I can see an Ardiles / Tottenham thing happening here, and the magic and respect that Shearer holds with the fans will be gone. Stick to criticizing every team south of Watford with your mate Hansen on MOTD
