Sunderland v Blackburn

New striker Darren Bent has started well for Sunderland with two goals in two matches, and even though they lost last time out, there's no shame in going down to what looks a very good Chelsea.

Blackburn lost their first game, of course, and I expect they will be going to the Stadium of Light to make things difficult and frustrating for the home team.

I expect Sunderland to come out on top in this one.

Verdict: 2-1

Darren bent has got off to a flyer so far this season and at this rate won't be far away from a chance at the golden boot, Steve Bruce wouldn't have expected to get much out of a game against Chelsea and Sunderland should have a great shot at a top half finish under Bruce, especially if Bent keeps firing.

Sam Allerdyce has a team of battlers and will no doubt work hard against Sunderland, Blackburn have signed Salgado on a free transfer and time will tell if Big Sam can get much out of him.

Mystic Jarv predicts 2-0 to Sunderland

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has several major injury doubts for Saturday's Premier League clash with Blackburn.

Midfielder Lee Cattermole is struggling with the back problem which forced his departure during Tuesday's 3-1 defeat by Chelsea, while goalkeeper Marton Fulop has had injections in a heel injury with Craig Gordon standing by.

Steed Malbranque (ankle) could miss out once again, while Cattermole's central midfield partner Lorik Cana is expected to play through the pain after hurting his hand in midweek.

Blackburn have club captain Ryan Nelsen back in their squad as they go in search of their first points of the new Premier League season.

A knee problem kept the New Zealand defender out of Rovers' opener against Manchester City, but he has now recovered to boost Sam Allardyce's rearguard.

Vince Grella could feature after coming off the bench last week, while new striker Nikola Kalinic is also in contention after his arrival from Hadjuk Split.

Fellow new signing Michel Salgado is yet to receive clearance to play so will have to wait before making his debut.

Long-term absentees Brett Emerton, Steven Reid and David Dunn are all making good progress but are still some way off first-team football.

Teams:

Sunderland (from): Fulop, Gordon, Carson, Bardsley, Ferdinand, Collins, Nosworthy, Da Silva, McCartney, Cana, Cattermole, Richardson, Reid, Malbranque, Leadbitter, Henderson, Tainio, Edwards, Bent, Jones, Campbell, Healy.

Blackburn (from): Robinson, Jacobsen, Samba, Givet, Warnock, Diouf, Nzonzi, Andrews, Pedersen, McCarthy, Roberts, Brown, Grella, Khizanishvili, Hoilett, Olsson, Di Santo, Nelsen, Kalinic, van Heerden.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sunderland may have suffered defeat to a strong Chelsea side, but two goals in two games from new £10m signing Darren Bent will give manager Steve Bruce plenty of optimism for the visit of Blackburn.

With victory at Bolton, Sunderland opened the season with their first away win of 2009. Now Steve Bruce must hope he can kick-start their campaign on Wearside with the first home victory of his tenure.

Rovers are still to get off the mark in both points and goals. Their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City was the league's first chance to sample the full force of Mark Hughes' summer signings.

Despite a robust display, the Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce lamented the quality of his side's finishing against City. Allardyce is toying with the idea of playing his major signing Nikola Kalinic but may save him until the Carling Cup game against Gillingham.

1435: TEAM NEWS Sunderland v Blackburn
Steed Malbranque comes in for Jordan Henderson in midfield as Sunderland manager Steve Bruce makes one change from the side which lost to Chelsea in midweek. Left-back Stephen Warnock is not in the Blackburn squad for the game - fuelling speculation he is set for a move to Aston Villa - while centre-back Ryan Nelsen returns to the starting line-up after injury. Franco di Santo comes in for Benni McCarthy in attack.

Sunderland top 8?

I'm seeing a league that looks like

Chelsea
United
Liverpool
Arsenal
City
Spurs

And then I think the final European place (I think it's 7th) is a fight between Fulham Villa Everton Sunderland

Everton and Villa need to get themselves on track quick and the longer it takes the more chance i think Sunderland could sneak in.

BTW this is by no means concrete, I do think we've still got a great chance of winning it also think 4th place is at risk for everyone. Can see anyone of the top 6 i've mentioned getting a top 4 place. Certainly currently think thats going to be the top 6 come the end of the season.
