England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson will deny having sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, a court has been told.

The 27-year-old, from Castle Eden, County Durham, was arrested in March.

His solicitor told magistrates in Peterlee he intends to deny three counts of sexual activity with a child under 16 and another of grooming.

The player was released on conditional bail to appear before Durham Crown Court on 3 June.

The court was told the three counts of sexual activity with a child are alleged to have taken place on one night in January at two locations in County Durham, while a meeting a child after sexual grooming offence was said to have happened between December and February.

Born in Sunderland, Johnson began his career at Middlesbrough before moving to Manchester City and then Sunderland for £10m in 2012.

During the five-minute hearing, his solicitor, Paul Morris, indicated he would plead not guilty when he next appeared in court.

He did not comment as he left court with his partner Stacey Flounders and was driven away in a Range Rover.

Leicester City have launched an internal investigation after three of the club’s players were allegedly filmed in an orgy with a Thai woman who was racially abused.

The footage, obtained by the Sunday Mirror, allegedly shows the 22-year-old defender James Pearson, the son of the club’s manager, Nigel, the striker Tom Hopper, 21, and the goalkeeper Adam Smith, 22, naked in a Thai hotel room as women are filmed engaged in sex acts. In a clip of the video posted on the newspaper’s website, one of the men appears to be heard calling one of the women a “slit eye” in a racist slur.

And later one calls one of the women “minging – an absolute one out of 10” as his friends laugh. Other offensive comments are made to the women as the players appear to laugh and egg each other on. It is alleged the trio shared the explicit video with friends back in the UK.

“We take the conduct of our players at every level extremely seriously and will take appropriate action, if necessary, once the full facts of the situation have been established,” said the club in a statement. “Pending the outcome of an internal investigation, the club will make no further comment.”

The club, currently touring Thailand celebrating their successful battle against relegation from the Premier League, are owned by the Thai billionaires Vichai and Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha and have been in “strategic, international partnership” with the Tourism Authority of Thailand for three years. The tourism authority’s Amazing Thailand branding is on the back of team shirts.

The trial of the Sunderland winger Adam Johnson on child sex charges has been put back to next year.

The 28-year-old appeared at Durham crown court for a hearing which dealt with legal rulings, ahead of a trial which had been scheduled for later this month.

Judge Christopher Prince, the recorder of Durham, accepted that the trial could not take place then, and said it will be heard at Bradford crown court on 10 February.

The judge said details of Monday’s hearing could not be reported, except to say it involved legal and administrative matters.

Johnson, wearing a blue-grey checked suit and white shirt with no tie, was driven to the hearing in a Range Rover, and walked into the court building with a group of men including his legal team and his father.

The defendant, from Castle Eden, County Durham, has already denied three counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of grooming.

Sunderland-born Johnson began his career at Middlesbrough before moving to Manchester City and then to Sunderland for £10m in 2012.

Former Liverpool and France striker Djibril Cisse, 34, has been arrested by police as part of a sex tape extortion investigation.

French police confirmed they are investigating an alleged attempt to bribe another international footballer.

Cisse is one of four people held as part of the inquiry, confirmed French prosecutors.

The ex-Sunderland and QPR forward was questioned because he knew the others involved, according to Reuters.

The alleged victim has not been identified by the authorities "out of respect for their private life", reported Associated Press.

Cisse joined Liverpool in 2004 and scored 24 goals in 79 appearances for the Merseyside club before leaving in 2007.

He then returned to the Premier League with Sunderland in 2008, netting 11 goals during a season-long loan, before joining QPR in January 2012, for whom he scored 10 goals in an 18-month spell.

Cisse, who was released by Ligue 1 side Bastia in the summer, also scored nine times for France in 41 appearances

Cisse I believe has been cleared on this as his claim that he was trying to warn Valbeuna about it has been accepted but in a new twist Karim Benzema is now being questioned by the police over his involvement.

He allegedly encouraged Valbeuna to pay them off his reasons for doing that are currently unknown.

Lawyers for Karim Benzema are to take legal action after the publication of an apparent transcript of a conversation between the Real Madrid striker and a friend which is part of the inquiry into an alleged sex-tape blackmail plot against his France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.

Benzema’s lawyer Sylvain Cormier said the publication of the phone-tap evidence violated the confidentiality of an official judicial investigation. He said the publication of the transcript, which was first reported by Europe 1 radio and then by the sports paper L’Equipe, was “a scandalous method”.

He told the Associated Press: “We believe the files have been leaked to the press to influence Valbuena’s future testimony.” The lawyers are to take action for “violation of judicial confidentiality” aimed at finding and punishing those who made the leaks. Another lawyer for Benzema, Alain Jakubowicz, said they would stop at nothing to find the person who was making the leaks.

Benzema was last week placed under formal judicial investigation for the alleged crime of conspiracy to blackmail and participating in a criminal group. Investigators are now seeking to determine whether or not Benzema played a role in any alleged extortion attempt against his team-mate over a sex tape. Cormier has said that Benzema was “totally innocent” and “played no part in any blackmail or attempted blackmail”.

The investigation was opened at the end of July when Valbuena, a France and Lyon midfielder, went to the police after being contacted by an unknown man claiming to be in possession of an incriminating sex tape apparently recorded on a mobile phone. The caller did not specify a sum of money but said they should come to an arrangement.

Police then took over, posing as Valbuena’s business associate in later calls with the alleged blackmailers, who threatened to release the video some time before the Euro 2016 Championship, which France is hosting. The investigation led them to three men who have been placed under formal judicial investigation.

According to L’Equipe’s transcript of the leaked 20-minute phone call, Benzema tried to convince Valbuena to deal directly with a friend of his over the sex tape. In the call, Benzema is said to tell his friend about a conversation he had had with Valbuena. Benzema says he told Valbuena he was there to help and that if Valbuena wanted the video to be destroyed he should see “my friend in Lyon directly”.

According to the transcript Benzema says in the call that he felt Valbuena thought it was all a joke. “I don’t think he’s taking us seriously,” Benzema said. When Valbuena had asked if his tattoos could be seen in the video, Benzema had told him: “You can see everything.”

He says Valbuena at one point seemed panicked and went white. He says he had told him: “Anyway, do what you want, if you don’t want to pay, it’s your life, but I warned you.”

His lawyer Cormier has maintained that Benzema was not involved and that he had tried to dissuade Valbuena from negotiating with the suspects. Benzema has been ordered to not make contact with others linked to the affair.

The Versailles prosecutor has said the alleged crime of conspiracy to blackmail and participating in a criminal group for which Benzema was being investigated could carry a prison sentence of at least five years.

According to a report from RTL radio, Valbuena has decided to become a civil party to the case and will be questioned next week by the investigating judge. The move means that his legal team will have access to the case files.

Both Benzema and Valbuena were omitted from France’s squad for the games against Germany on Friday and England next Tuesday.

Real Madrid have said they are standing by their striker. “The Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, held a meeting with the player in which he gave him his full support and expressed his confidence that his actions were in good faith and that he is completely innocent,” the club said in a statement.
