Of the "last generation" of players that Fergie has promoted from the academy he is the only one who for me has nailed down a first team spot to the point where you don't think we're desperate to sign a right back who's better than him.

Evans for me is decent but you could easily improve on him.
Smalling, Jones & DDG ~ Really these are signings all were ready for the first team when they arrived at the club.
Cleverley & Welbeck ~ Showed lots of early promise but much like a new band they're struggling after a pretty poor second album and need to recover quickly.

For me in an ideal world the likes of Evans/Cleverley/Welbeck would be the next generation of reliably home grown squad players like Brown/O'Shea/Fletcher who come in do a 6/7 out of 10 job whenever you need them but currently they're having to play every single week and I think they're struggling to cope with it.

As for his brother Fabio I think it's probably time for him to move on and build his career elsewhere as at this age he needs to start playing some games he's falled down the pecking order to 3rd choice RB & LB. Personally I rate him much higher than Buttner and I'd rather see him playing at RB than Smalling/Jones as he is a specialist who can get forward I just feel that the loan move was a huge mistake Fergie should never have sent him to that clown college that has been QPR for the last 2 years (did we not learn from Macheda?). His progression has ground to a halt and it's probably best that he signs for a new club and has a proper go at establishing himself in their first team as I just don't think he's going to get a chance here lets not forget in 2011 he started the CL final at RB ahead of his brother on merit.

I'd like to see Fabio get another chance before leaving. As you say he started ahead of Rafael on merit. He's considered the better defensive player of the two and was considered the better attacking player of the two. Has he taken a free kick for us since he's been here? He was also a bit of a free kick specialist prior to joining us.

I think the big thing that spurred Rafael on was his goal against Arsenal gave him the self belief and his sending off against Bayern made him want to prove a point. Fabio hasn't had a high or low moment at United. He's my favourite player in our squad at the moment.

The fact Buttner & Smalling get games ahead of him at FB to me suggests Moyes doesn't rate him. I agree give the lad a chance maybe he'll play in the CC game we have coming up but unless we get an injury crisis at the back I don't see him getting games.

Following yesterday's red card many including myself have predicted the end for Fabio but it was another stupid red card in an important cup game that many thought spelt the end for Rafeal. His red for a stupid second booking at home vs Bayern Munich many thought spelt the end for him at Utd but it was after this that the penny finally dropped him the rash tackling became less frequent especially when he was already on a booking.

Hopefully it's a similar story for Fabio as for me if we had a ready made (identical) replacement for Rafael at RB it would solve a lot of our problems in this area but it will be a real test of his character to see how he comes back from this. If he wants to stay at Utd he needs to keep his head down and work hard and impress in training and just pray Moyes gives him another chance otherwise it's probably time for him to move on permanently just to go and get himself a regular game and see where his career goes.

it was stupid but in the heat of the moment after being on a leash/caged for months. Hopefully he gets another/Ando-like chance before the end of the season..

Considering Moyes loves crosses you would think he'd want his full backs to be capable of putting in a good ball when in attacking positions which is why I think it's odd that he hasn't given Fabio a chance more especially at RB where he can attack on his stronger foot as Smalling cannot do anything productive in the final 1/3

All he had to do was keep his head for 15 minutes keep it nice and tidy no mistakes and he probably would've been fine but instead he decided I need to win this game on my own for Utd to prove a point to the manager and it went horribly wrong. Obviously Moyes needs to speak to him about it and try and build him back up again as like I said if we can get him to even 90% of the level his brother has reached at RB they would be fantastic options in the squad.

Quotes from their agent suggesting that both of them might leave be leaving in the summer.

I can understand Fabio moving on but it would be crazy to let Rafael go unless someone is offering stupid money for him but why weaken the one position in the defence where we are arguably as strong as all our rivals?

Probably a rubbish google translation of the italian site. Rafael is here until 2016 - no way we let him go!

For me Rafa is arguably the best RB in the world. I'd hate to see him go. But he has been with his brother his entire life and if his brother leaves I can see him going too.

Quote:
Rafael da Silva says that the Manchester United players should shoulder the blame for last season's disappointing showing.

The 23-year-old was a regular fixture at right-back under David Moyes, but was unable to prevent United from missing out on European football as they finished seventh in their worst campaign since the 1989/90 season.

A hamstring injury picked up in late March saw Rafael miss the remainder of the season as Moyes was sacked and replaced by Ryan Giggs for the final four league games.

Rafael admitted that it was difficult to adapt following Sir Alex Ferguson's departure last summer, but believes that he and his team-mates should take responsibility for United's failings.

"The year was not normal. I had been there for six years, I was a champion three times, runners-up twice," he told Globo Esporte

"I think this is football, we changed manager after 26 years and that affects any team. Each manager has his own style.

"The players are to blame too, the things changed off the field, now we have to try again next season."

Holland boss Louis van Gaal has since been appointed as Moyes' successor on a three-year deal and he will take charge at United as soon as his side's World Cup campaign is over.

According to Rafael, the 62-year-old comes with glowing reports from his United team-mate and Dutch captain Robin van Persie.

"Van Persie said many good things about him especially when his name was being linked to the club," he said.

"I heard a lot when he was at Barcelona and Bayern too. Now we have to wait."

Rafael has two caps for Brazil but says that missing out on Luiz Felipe Scolari's World Cup squad came as no surprise having failed to feature internationally for almost two years.

"After I wasn't called up last year when I was playing well, I felt it would be hard to be called up for the World Cup," he admitted.

Scored a lovely goal for the U21's tonight with his left foot.

Falcao and Valdes also featured.

LVG either doesn't rate him or doesn't think he's fit enough to play as he's only just made a return to the bench.

I think it's pretty clear that he'll be moved on in the summer.

My only problem with Rafael is his fitness you just can't rely on him to stay fit he's had 1 injury free season since he broke through as an 18 year old.

Kicked out is strong Pak in the case of Evans and Rafael they are playears we've brought through but they aren't up to standard.

I'd keep Rafael but I'd sign a proper first choice RB we can rely on to stay fit
